Students receive Chancellor�s Excellence in Research and Creativity Awards
Ten students have been selected to receive the Chancellor�s Excellence in Undergraduate Research and Creativity Awards at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP). The students were nominated by their respective deans and subsequently chosen for the honor by members of the Student Research Fund committee.
Each student has $1,000 available for participation and attendance at the UW System Symposium for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity at UW-Eau Claire on April 29, and the 17th National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), March 13 through 15 at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City.
The award winners from the College of Professional Studies are junior Leah Worzella of Wausau, senior Carrie Mayer, of Newton, and sophomore Sara Jones of Kennan, all interior architecture majors who presented a study of "Enabling Public Uses in Public Places: A Case Study on Redesigning a Shopping Mall," faculty mentor Nisha Fernando.
College of Fine Arts and Communication recipients are Andrea B. Skurr, a senior dance and music major from Ripon, who presented a dance movement, "J2," and Ryan Feiler-Poethke, a senior theatre arts major from Cedarburg, who presented "Methods of Theatrical Scenery Automation and Motion Control," both mentored by Susan Gingrasso.
College of Letters and Science winner Benjamin Kucera, senior chemistry major from Brainerd, Minn., who presented "Synthesis of Phosphine Supported Germanium Nanoparticles," faculty mentor Robin Tanke, and Philip Kauth, a senior biology major from Manitowoc, who presented "Genetic Control of Verticillum Wilt Resistance in Potato, " faculty mentor Shelley Janske.
College of Natural Resource winners are Katherine Brashear, a senior wildlife major from Wheaton, Ill., and Mandi Huntington, a senior wildlife major from Wisconsin Rapids who presented "Habitat associated with barred owl and great horned owl survey locations in the Sandhill Wildlife Area, Babcock, Wisconsin," faculty mentor Tim F. Ginnett, and Marie R. Galewski, a senior water resources major from Eau Claire, who presented "Nitrous Oxide in Groundwater Discharge From An Agricultural Basin," faculty mentor Bryant Browne.
Faculty members invited to the NCUR conference and the UW System Symposium and awarded up to $1,000 in travel were Ginnett, Gingrasso, Fernando and Tanke.
