Baroque Trumpet Recital
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and the Law Firm of Wendorff, Ellison and David will sponsor a Baroque trumpet recital at Frame Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1300 Main St., Stevens Point, at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Feb, 14.
Performed by Niklas Eklund and John Foster on trumpet, and Kathrine Handford on organ, the recital will be open to the public free of charge.
The program will include "Sonata in D Major for two trumpets" and "Sonata in D Major for two trumpets: Aria and Chorals" by Petronio Franceschini, "Aria and Chorals" and "Fantasy and Fugue in G minor" by J.S. Bach, "Fredon sur la Romanesque," "Sonata Number 1 for trumpet and organ" by Giovanni Buonaventura Viviani, "Sonata No. 69 for two trumpets and organ" by Johan Christoph Pezel, "Sonata No. 3: Detta del Niccolini" and Sonata No. 8: Detta del nero" by Girolamo Fantini, "Suite in D Major" by G.F. Handel, and "Sinfonia a due Trombe" (anonymous).
Eklund is a native of G�teborg, Sweden, and was trained at the School of Music and Musicology of G�teborg University. He continued his studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland. Since then he has performed with the Basel Radio Symphony Orchestra, the London Baroque, the Bach Ensemble, the American Baroque Soloists, the Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble, and the English Baroque Soloists. In 1996 Eklund was the winner of the first Altenburg International Baroque Trumpet Competition held in Germany. Lately he has been involved in several recording projects including his five volume overview of the Baroque trumpet and his latest release,"Haydn and Hummel," which has been met with great critical acclaim. Eklund is currently the principal trumpeter in the Zurich Chamber Orchestra.
Foster, a native of Australia, established himself as a consummate performer by the age of 15. He was a soloist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Australia Youth Orchestra. He attended the Queensland Conservatorium and attended the Royal College of Music in London where he received the Samuel Herbert Memorial Prize for Trumpet. He has performed with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and performed on baroque trumpet with several groups including the Australian Bradenburg Orchestra and the Melbourne Early Music Ensemble. Foster is founder and director of the Australian Baroque Brass. He is currently teaching trumpet at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and directing the Baroque Trumpet Ensemble.
Handford holds a master of music degree in organ performance and literature and the performer�s certificate in organ from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., where she is currently pursuing a doctorate in organ. Handford has performed recitals in the U.S., Canada, England and Scandinavian countries and was a featured soloist at festivals in Norway, Finland and Italy. In 1993 she won the 35th International J.S. Bach Competition and received the John R. Rodland Scholarship. She also received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Handford is the director of music and organist at Hamline United Methodist Church in St. Paul, Minn.
