Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies offers conference

"Promoting Positive Peace" is the theme of the 18th annual student conference of the Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies, to be held Friday, April 16, at St. Norbert College in De Pere.

The Wisconsin Institute is headquartered at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Students from all disciplines as well as the public may attend the conference, which will be held in Bemis International Center at the corner of Grand and Third Streets in De Pere. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., with the first session starting at 9 a.m. The conference will feature panels and roundtables on a variety of topics, including conflict, security, peace, justice and the environment at the individual, national and international level.

A registration fee of $10 for students and institute members and $15 for the public includes a light breakfast, buffet lunch and participation in conference activities. Memberships to the institute also may be purchased for $15 for students and $35 for individuals. The fee includes conference registration for the conference and a copy of the "Journal for the Study of Peace and Conflict." Pre-registration should be sent before March 19.

Keynote speaker Derek Jeffreys, assistant professor of humanistic and religious studies at UW-Green Bay, is a specialist in ethics and warfare. He recently won a fellowship from the John Templeton Foundation for his activity in study of science and religion.

The conference will conclude at 4 p.m. with an awards ceremony for students with the best presentations and papers. College and university students from Wisconsin are invited to send papers for consideration. Possible topics include: respecting human rights, enhancing economic and ecological well-being, engaging in nonviolent resolution of conflict, personal and social transformation, or dignity of work and the rights of workers. The Peace and Justice Center at St. Norbert College is sponsoring the conference. The Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies will offer a fall conference Oct. 6-8 at Marquette University in Milwaukee. The Wisconsin Institute, based at UWSP, is a consortium of public and private institutions of higher learning in Wisconsin that are dedicated to encouraging and legitimizing teaching and research on the roots of violence, national and global security issues and all factors necessary for a just global peace.
