Workshops for girls interested in science offered at UWSP

"Women and Science Day" will be offered by the Continuing Education Program at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Friday, March 3, 2006.

The workshops are held for seventh and eighth-graders interested in science by professional women working in a variety of fields. Patricia S. McManus, from the department of plant pathology of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will give the keynote presentation "Get on Board! Letting Science Take You Where You Want to Go." Participants will learn about nutrition and dietetics, design a gym shoe, make root beer, study anatomy and the environment and much more.

"The girls found the day to be informative and worthwhile�," said Paul Trader, Lourdes High School, Oshkosh, who accompanied students to previous sessions. "I believe my students felt they, too, could find a profession they would enjoy and dedicate themselves to."

Classes for the spring workshop include:

  • Designer Sneakers
  • Down the Pipes
  • Fabulous Fungi
  • Groundwater in Wisconsin
  • Happy Healthy Living
  • Mice, Ice, and Rats
  • Noisy Women and Silent Spring
  • Refining Foods: Sophistication or Sabotage?
  • Waste management - It�s More Than Talkin� Trash
  • Space is limited, so early registration is recommended. The cost is $25 per person and includes lunch and hands-on workshops. There is also a credit option available for teachers who attend as chaperones.
