LIFE classes scheduled for April

Informative and educational classes for the adult learner will be held in April through the Learning is Forever (LIFE) program hosted by the Office of Continuing Education at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Affiliated with the Elderhostel Institute Network, LIFE is one of 200 similar membership-based adult learning associations around the nation, with dues of $60 per year.

The classes meet at UWSP in the morning or midday, with no attendance taken, no homework and no exams.

April classes include:

Art and Architecture in Europe�This slide presentation and discussion will cover the major stylistics from ancient Greece to Modernism using art and architecture in eastern and western Europe. Mark Koepke will lead the course at 10 a.m. on Monday April 3.

God and the Philosophers�Prominent philosophers� ideas will be examined as a way to explore the many arguments of "God." A few philosophers that will be considered are: St. Augustine, St. Thomas, Pascal, Kierkegaard, Freud, Dostoevsky, Emerson, William James and Paul Tillich. Led by Richard Feldman, sessions are held at 10 a.m. or 1:30 p.m., Wednesdays, April 5, 12 and 19.

The Magic of Bhutan� Between China and India is the tiny kingdom of Bhutan. Explore the beauty, culture, and sustainable development policies of this amazing land. The session will be led by Lowell Klessig at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5.

Improvisational Theater Play (Continued from Fall 2005)� Improvisational theater play is in the realm of physical, mental, and artistic freedom. A realm of no right or wrong for the players, it is an activity whereby one takes risks without judgment. It is an activity for its own sake. The class is led by Tom Nevins and is held on Thursdays, April 6, 13, 20 and 27 at 10 a.m.

Theater: Danstage Susan Gingrasso will provide an introduction to the performance of Danstage 2006. Performance dates are April 7-9 and 13-15. Participants need to purchase their tickets at the University Ticket Office, 200 Division St, 715-346-4100. The classes are held on Sunday, April 9 at 1 p.m.

An Introduction to Postmodernism- This program will consider three stages of postmodernism: as articulated by Emmanuel Levinas in his 1995 collection of essays, Alterity & Transcendence. Led by Ray Stroik, the class will be held at 10 a.m. on Mondays, April 10, 17 and 24.

History and Current Status of the Labor Movement- The first session will examine the rise of organized labor from the 1930s to the 1960s as one of the most important social movements of the 20th century. The second session, "The State of Working America" will examine recent trends in the workplace including wages, benefits, hours, unionization, and security. The third session will focus on the co-authored book, The International Garment Workers� Union in Pennsylvania, including the decline of the American garment manufacturing industry. Led by Bill Skelton and Bob Wolensky, the class will be held on Tuesdays, April 11, 18 and 25 at 7:15 p.m.

CNR Mosaic Mural: Design and Engraving- A slide-illustrated lecture on the design, fabrication and installation of the ceramic mosaic mural on the south side of the College of Natural Resources building will be presented by its chief artist, Dick Schneider. Design symbolism, local and state politics, fund-raising and a volunteer work corps led to the final construction of this largest mural of its kind in the United States. The class will be taught by Dick Schneider and will be held on Monday, April 17, at 10 a.m.

Encounters with Playwright Arthur Kopit- People in this course will read and discuss two plays by Arthur Kopit. The course will conclude with a presentation from him at 1 p.m., Sunday, May 7. Participants need to purchase tickets at the University Box Office, 200 Division St, (715) 346-4100. Led by Isabelle Stelmahoske and Earl Spangenberg, the class will be held on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. on April 18 and 25.

Culture of China Tour of 2005- China is a country full of history, beauty, and great contrasts. The presenters will share some of the highlights of a June 2005 China trip. A slide show and question/answer period will be included. The class will be led by George Kung and Howard Thoyre, and will be held at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19.

"Organic" Lunch- In a brief concert, Michael Keller and friends will demonstrate the Wahl organ in the Founders Room of Old Main. Bring your own bag lunch. The lunch will be held on Friday, April 21, at 12:15 p.m.

Walk the Labyrinth at the Cameron House- What is a labyrinth? What is its function? Is it true that walking the labyrinth is a form of meditation and energizes the walker? These questions and more will be addressed at class. Class led by Katia Marquart and Chuck Egle will be held on Sunday, April 23, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Sesquicentennial Portfolio of Etchings and Engravings- Discuss the artists� techniques in the creation of the limited edition etchings and engravings displayed in Old Main, commissioned for the sesquicentennial of the state of Wisconsin. The course will be led by Dick Schneider on Monday, April 24, at 10 a.m.

Spring Songs- Participants will take an in-depth look at the music performed by the Monteverdi Master Chorale in their concerts on Friday, April 28, and Sunday, April 30, which will include selections from Leonard Bernstein�s Candide. Participants should purchase their own tickets by calling (715) 342-5636. Led by Jim Carpenter on Thursday, April 27, at 1:30 p.m.

LIFE Annual Meeting- The annual meeting will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, and will include a pot-luck supper, a brief business meeting, and entertainment. Plates and utensils are provided and beverages may be purchased. No RSVP required.
