Danielle Lawe named woman of color honoree
A senior studying elementary education at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) is one of several women statewide to receive an award for "contributions to campus and community."
Danielle Lawe of Neopit has been named a "woman of color" honoree for 2008. The UW System Women’s Studies Consortium and Office of Diversity and Development co-sponsor the recognition in conjunction with the annual women’s studies conference to be held at UW-Green Bay on Saturday, April 5. The conference is held annually to publicly recognize the contributions that women of color have made to the UW System, and in particular, to diversity and women’s studies.
"She is not afraid to speak out on diversity issues, despite a soft voice and humble demeanor," said Sharon Cloud, director of the Native American Center at UWSP, who nominated Lawe for this prestigious recognition.
"Danielle represents the very best in student success. She is an outstanding example of the extent to which UWSP fosters a campus environment in which student diversity is a matter of pride," said Chancellor Linda Bunnell. "To meet her is to meet a young woman who already is a superb ambassador for both the campus and Central Wisconsin."
Lawe’s campus leadership includes active membership in both American Indian student groups, American Indians Reaching for Opportunities (AIRO) and the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES). She has served as a residence hall staff member for the past two years. She has volunteered to speak for several faculty in their classes and presented a boxes and walls session in the residence halls.
"Staff members in my office have commented that Danielle is an ‘anchor’ for AIRO," said Cloud. She adds a great deal to the group dynamic and her participation with the student organization has been a great asset.
Lawe is a graduate of Shawano High School. After graduation from UWSP, Lawe plans to return to her home area to be a teacher.
