Schmeeckle Reserve offers spring programs in April and May

Discover the wildlife, landscape and history of central Wisconsin by participating in a variety of programs to be held in April and May at Schmeeckle Reserve at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

On Thursday, April 3, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., discover what carnivores call the area their home, the controversy that surrounds them and the roles they play.

Learn about plant species from around the globe that are invading Schmeeckle Reserve on Tuesday, April 15, from 6 to 7 p.m. Discover the plants first hand when exploring the influence of nonnative species, how they can be managed and what can be done to limit their spread.

Become a treasure hunter on Sunday, April 20, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Iverson Park in Stevens Point. Learn to use a GPS in this crash course in geocaching. Participants will meet at the Iverson Park shelter near the volleyball court and are encouraged to bring their own GPS if they own one.

Join Sam Thayer, author of "The Foragers Harvest," on Thursday, April 24, from 6 to 7 p.m. The informative hike will explain how plants in our area can be used.

Look at nature through an American Indians eyes on Monday, April 28, from 7 to 8 p.m. Discover how the earth, nature and animals relate to the everyday lives of contemporary tribal members in Wisconsin.

Name that tune while discovering the frog chorus in the Schmeeckle wetlands on Tuesday, April 29, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Enjoy an informational talk, sound identification games and a small hike on Thursday, May 8, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Learn to identify and understand some of the sounds of spring.

Open to the public free of charge, the workshops are led by UWSP students and are held at the Schmeeckle Reserve Visitor Center, located on North Point Drive near the Michigan Avenue intersection. For more information or to register, call the Schmeeckle Reserve Office at (715)

Schmeeckle Reserve is a 265-acre nature preserve on the UWSP campus. The Browse Shop has gifts for all ages, including a wide variety of nature books and field guides, and is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. For more information visit www.uwsp.edu/cnr/schmeeckle.
