Get to Know BOW – Becoming an Outdoors-Woman
The Wisconsin Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program is offering a learn-how-to event featuring GPS navigation and geocaching on Saturday, April 26.
This spring outing for adult women will be held at the Mackenzie Environmental Center near Poynette, 25 miles north of Madison. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Registration is $39 and includes lunch, use of equipment, instruction and a tour of the environmental center. Participants will begin the day with geocaching, a GPS-based treasure hunt activity. A guided tour of Mackenzie’s nature trails and Native Wisconsin Wildlife exhibit will follow lunch. Participants also will learn how to make six desserts outdoors in cast iron kettles called Dutch ovens. The day will close with door prizes and a dessert tasting session.
More than 3 million Wisconsin citizens enjoy outdoor recreation each year. Thanks to opportunities provided by programs like BOW, a growing number of them are women. BOW teaches women outdoor skills in a noncompetitive, supportive atmosphere with an emphasis on safety and fun.
"The things that happen when you’re outdoors become lasting memories and stories," explains BOW director Peggy Farrell. "This field day is great way to try something new at an affordable cost."
