Proposals sought for annual peace institute conference
Presentation and discussion proposals are now being sought for the 20th annual conference of the Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies at Marquette University on Oct. 6-8.
Sponsored by the institute and the Marquette University Institute for Transnational Justice, the conference has the theme, "Challenges and Paths to Justice." Ideas are being sought from diverse fields, methodologies and backgrounds.
"Proposals must address some aspect of challenges to achieving justice beyond national borders, paths to addressing these challenges and the ramifications of such issues for broader questions of conflict and peace," said Sarah Stillwell, the institutes administrative director.
Proposals may focus on aspects of economic development and global inequality; issues of justice, security and terrorism; issues of transnational environmental harm; aspects of transnational crime including migrant trafficking and the illicit drug trade; issues of international law and movement towards transnational protection of human rights; and efforts to achieve transitional justice in the aftermath of political regime change, Stillwell added.
Proposal submissions must be a brief (no more than 100 words) description of the paper topic or interest in a roundtable discussion theme. Contact information also must be included. Send proposals by March 1 to H. Richard Friman, Department of Political Science, Marquette University, PO Box 1881, Milwaukee, WI 53201-1881 or to h.r.friman@marquette.edu.
The Wisconsin Institute, based at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, is a consortium of public and private institutions of higher learning in Wisconsin dedicated to encouraging and legitimizing teaching and research on the roots of violence, national and global security issues and all factors necessary for a just global peace.
For more information, contact Stillwell at 715-346-3383 or wiinst@uwsp.edu. The institute is online at www.wisconsin-institute.org.
