UWSP again among top Midwestern universities
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) continues to rate within the top ten public universities in the Midwest, according to U.S. News and World Report.
UWSP earned high marks for having the highest percentage of full-time faculty members among the UW System’s regional universities.
"Research shows that students learn more, are happier with their education and are more likely to graduate if they have more contact with their professors," said Chancellor Linda Bunnell. "We have more full-time faculty members who are able share their time and enthusiasm for their subjects with their students, helping them connect to their future in both professional and personal ways."
UWSP’s faculty mentors consistently help students excel in research, resulting in students winning the prestigious Goldwater National Science Scholarship, earning student research grants, making presentations at professional conferences and presenting their research publicly at the Madison capitol.
UWSP faculty and staff members are consistently honored for teaching and scholarship, garnering nearly $8 million in external research and teaching grants in 2007. Two faculty members served abroad as Fulbright Scholars last year, and a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant from Libya will teach Arabic at UWSP this year through the Institute of International Education.
U.S. News and World Report uses several indicators of academic excellence to rate the campuses, including academic reputation as assessed by peers, retention, faculty resources, student characteristics, financial resources, graduation rates and alumni giving. Schools are organized by mission and region. UWSP continues to achieve academic excellence in a number of ways, including:
Recruiting outstanding students. UWSP welcomed a freshman class of 1,624 last fall, of which 14 percent were in the top 10 percent of their high school class, 45 percent were in the top 25 percent and 95 percent were in the top half. These incoming freshmen had scored an average of 22.8 on the ACT.
Admitting a diverse student population. Incoming freshmen in 2007 were the most diverse in the university’s history.
Exceeding UW System graduation rates.
Having the highest percentage of graduates who have studied abroad compared to all UW System institutions.
Having a higher percentage of classrooms wired for distance education than what is reported for the UW System overall.
Ranking first in the amount of total state operating grants and contacts received.
One of 13 four-year universities in the UW System, UWSP is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. UWSP offers over 120 undergraduate programs, 16 graduate programs and a doctorate in audiology within the colleges of Fine Arts and Communication, Letters and Science, Natural Resources and Professional Studies.
