UWSP Symphony Orchestra to perform April 30
The University of Wisconsin-Symphony Orchestra will present its final concert of the year on Wednesday, April 30.
The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Michelsen Hall in the Noel Fine Arts Center. As part of the Music Department Scholarship Series, tickets are $6 for the general public, $3 for senior citizens, $2 for youth and free the day of the concert for students with a UWSP ID.
Tickets are available at University Information and Tickets in the Dreyfus University Center, or by calling (715) 346-4100 or (800) 838-3378. Visa, MasterCard or Discover are accepted. Tickets may also be purchased at the door if seats are available.
Under the direction of Music Professor Patrick Miles, the orchestra’s first piece is a world premiere of a work by UWSP senior Joseph Stillwell. "Harbinger," written in 2007, is an apt concert opener with much energy, says Miles. Stillwell will attend the San Francisco Conservatory in the fall to earn a master’s degree in composition.
Violinist Jessica Ryan will perform a solo of Pablo de Sarasate’s "Zigeunerweisen," or "Gypsy Airs." A junior music major, Ryan is the winner of the orchestra’s 2008 Alice Peet Faust Concerto Competition. She studies with Violin Professor Steven Bjella.
The concert will conclude with Camille Saint-Saens’ "Symphony No. 3," known as the "Organ Symphony." One of the largest works by Saint-Saens, it utilizes piano and organ in addition to the usual orchestration.
