Wailin’ Jennys to perform in Stevens Point

A melodic contemporary folk trio, the Wailin’ Jennys, will take the stage at Sentry Theatre on Wednesday, Feb. 20, as part of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Performing Arts Series.

The Wailin’Jennys will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults, $14 for senior citizens and $6 for youth. UWSP students with ID may buy tickets in advance for $4.50 or be admitted free the day of the show if seats remain.

Tickets may be purchased at University Information and Tickets, located in the Dreyfus University Center concourse, during the hours of 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, and noon to 9 p.m. on weekends. Formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 2002, the Wailin’ Jennys are known for their intuitive three-part harmonies, engaging stage presence and uplifting repertoire. Members include soprano Ruth Moody, mezzo soprano Nicky Mehta and alto Heather Masse.

“What all songs have in common are gorgeous three-part harmonies,” says Rob Williams of the Winnipeg Free Press. “When they sing in unison, they have the ability to send shivers up your spine.”

The group’s most recent album, “Firecracker,” made it to number two on the Billboard bluegrass charts in 2006 and won several awards, including best contemporary album from the North American Folk Alliance. The trio has also won a Juno Award, Canada’s top music honor. They are featured regularly on Garrison Keillor’s show, “A Prairie Home Companion.”
