Area students excel in Math League competition
Top students in mathematics and computer science from 50 Central Wisconsin high schools competed in the second round of the 36th annual Central Wisconsin Mathematics League on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Teams from Baraboo, Clintonville, Pittsville and Loyal high schools were first place winners in four school-size divisions in the competition, which tests skills in algebra, geometry and advanced problems. The third and final meet will take place on April 4. A year-end banquet will be held at the UWSP University Center on May 1 to honor both team and individual winners.
By division, the first through third teams of the second round were:
SIZE ONE (LARGEST) SCHOOLS: first place � Baraboo High School, advised by Chris Labeots; second place � Marshfield High School, advised by Peggy Hartwig; third place � Wausau West High School, advised by Jeff Bruggink.
SIZE TWO (LARGE) SCHOOLS: first place � Clintonville High School, advised by Jodi Veleke; second place �Nekoosa High School, advised by Mary Benbow; third place � Waupaca High School, advised by Dale Feldt.
SIZE THREE (MEDIUM) SCHOOLS: first place � Pittsville High School, advised by Karen Brownell; second place � Tri-County High School, advised by John Mesyk and Annette Carroll; third place � Marathon High School, advised by Bob Tess.
SIZE FOUR (SMALL) SCHOOLS: first place � Loyal High School, advised by James McBride and Beth Kaiser; second place � Marion High School, advised by John Markowski; third place � Assumption High School in Wisconsin Rapids, advised by Janice Schwaub.
The competition is sponsored by Wausau Insurance/Liberty Mutual and Sentry Insurance and is co-coordinated by Professor Emeritus Stan Carlson and Professor Elaine Hutchinson of UWSP�s Department of Mathematics and Computing. Math League exam writers and committee members include UWSP faculty members Assistant Professor Hurlee Gonchigdanzan, Assistant Professor David Harpster, Professor Dale Rohm, Associate Lecturer Larry Schoch, Assistant Professor Susan Talarico, Professor Michael Treuden and Associate Professor Nate Wetzel.
