Second meet results for UWSP Math League competition

Top students in mathematics and computer science from high schools in Marshfield, Medford, Plainfield and Loyal won first place in the second meet of the 34th Annual Central Wisconsin Mathematics League on Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

The students competed in teams within four school-size divisions, solving problems in algebra, geometry and advanced problems. The third and last meet of the year will take place on March 31 and a year-end banquet will be held at the UWSP University Center on May 3 to honor this year�s team and individual winners.

The competition is sponsored by Wausau Insurance/Liberty Mutual and Sentry Insurance and is coordinated by Professor Stan Carlson and Professor Michael Treuden of UWSP�s Department of Mathematics and Computing. Math League exam writers and committee members include UWSP faculty Emeritus Professor Gil Mages, Assistant Professor Hurlee Gonchigdanzan, Professor Dale Rohm, Associate Lecturer Larry Schoch, Professor Richard Mitchell and Associate Professor Nate Wetzel. Also assisting are two freshman mathematics majors, Becky Peterson, Wisconsin Rapids, and Michael Greunke, Marion, who both won scholarships to UWSP through Math League competition while they were in high school.

By division, the first through third teams of the second meet were:

SIZE ONE (LARGEST) SCHOOLS: first place � Marshfield High School, advised by Peggy Hartwig; second place � Stevens Point Area Senior High School, advised by Greg Chelcun; third place � Wausau West High School, advised by Jeff Bruggink.

SIZE TWO (LARGE) SCHOOLS: first place � Medford High School, advised by Michael Strick; second place � Mosinee High School, advised by Todd Felch; third place � Nekoosa High School, advised by Mary Benbow.

SIZE THREE (MEDIUM) SCHOOLS: first place � Tri-County High School, advised by John Mesyk and Annette Carroll; second place � Laconia High School, advised by Darrell Koplitz; third place - Marathon High School, advised by Bob Tess.

SIZE FOUR (SMALL) SCHOOLS: first place � Loyal High School, advised by Beth Kaiser and Jim McBride; second place �Marion High School, advised by John Markowski; third place � Assumption High School in Wisconsin Rapids, advised by Janice Schwab.
