A Campbellsport graphic design student at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) has won first place in a national design competition

Jamie Karoses, W2696 Haven Drive, Campbellsport, won a $5,500 scholarship as the winner of the 2008 Design*Sponge Scholarship competition. A UWSP senior majoring in graphic design and two-dimensional art, she is the daughter of Randy and Colleen Karoses and a 2004 graduate of Campbellsport High School.

Her designs, chosen from 2000 applicants, included package designs that included soap wrappers made out of plantable packaging embedded with basil and mint seeds as well as hand illustrated paper design and textile design. The contest invited current college students to submit designs for products, furniture, surfaces, textiles, ceramics or interiors.

"Jamie is a practitioner of what I would call wholistic design—she sees life and design as one-in-the-same," said Diana Black, an assistant professor of art and design and a co-director of The Design Center on campus. "Her investigation of textiles, pattern, and ways of making art and design sets her apart from other graphic designers and her passion for learning and experimentation fuels her research. Jamie's success as a student and as a design intern has come from her indomitable and joyous spirit."

Karoses has won scholarships from the Campbellsport Scholarship Fund and Women’s Club. At UWSP she is a member of the Student Art League and American Institute of Graphic Artists and previously won the Festival of the Arts Scholarship and second place in the Susan Murphy Piatrowski Memorial Ceramic Award competition. She has served as a student curator at UWSP’s Carlsten Gallery and as an intern at the UWSP Design Center, helping design the UWSP College of Fine Arts and Communication annual report, College of Professional Studies newsletter and other campus projects.
