A program on the rescue of "the nine" at the Quecreek Mine in Pennsylvania is one of the highlights of the 55^th annual Surveyors� Institute, held Wednesday through Friday Jan. 21-23, 2004, in Stevens Point.

A professional forum and training conference sponsored by the Wisconsin Society of Land Surveyors and University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Extension, the institute will be held at the Stevens Point Holiday Inn on Wednesday, 9 a.m.-3:45 p.m., on Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

The Quecreek Mine presentation will be held on Wednesday afternoon, with speakers Joseph Gallo and Chad Mostoller illustrating how teamwork and engineering saved the miners� lives.

In addition, 19 other session choices will be offered, including presentations on collateral evidence, practical application of datums and coordinates, Wisconsin water laws, contractual pitfalls, high definition surveying and more. Exhibits will be on display on Wednesday and Thursday.

A banquet will be held on Thursday evening, with entertainment by hypnotist Sami Dare. A guest program is also offered which includes the mine rescue presentation, a charm-making session and a presentation on wellness activities such as yoga and nutrition.

The registration fee includes program materials, souvenir, a certificate of participation, refreshments, two lunches and the banquet. Single day registrations are also available and do not include a banquet ticket. Students may attend at a reduced rate which includes meals. Register by Friday, Jan. 9, and receive the early-bird fee.
