Faculty recital to feature alumna pianist
A University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) faculty clarinetist
will be joined by a UWSP alumna pianist in a recital on Saturday,
Sept. 26.
Andrea Splittberger-Rosen, professor of clarinet, woodwind
coordinator and director of the Campus Band, and Mara Beckman,
instructor of piano and composition at the Wausau Conservatory of
Music and a 2000 UWSP graduate, will perform three major works for
clarinet and piano at 3 p.m. on Saturday in Michelsen Hall of the
Noel Fine Arts Center on campus.
This recital is part of the Music Department Scholarship Series.
Tickets are $7 for the public, $4 for senior citizens, $3 for youth
and free the day of the concert for students with a UWSP ID. Tickets
are available at the University Information and Tickets Office in
the Dreyfus University Center, or by calling 715-346-4100 or
800-838-3378. Visa, MasterCard or Discover are accepted. Tickets may
also be purchased at the door if seats are available.
Together Splittberger-Rosen and Beckman will perform "Sonatina" by
Bohuslav Martinu, "Time Pieces" by Robert Muczynski and "Sonata in F
minor, Op. 120, No. 1" by Johannes Brahms.
Splittberger-Rosen will also perform "The Moon in My Window," a
recent work for unaccompanied clarinet by Eric P. Mandat, who
describes the music as “depicting the daily activities of a child:
waking, playing, eating, nap time, more play (always!), and finally,
bedtime.†Some of these depictions are titled "Butterfly Morning,"
“You’re It," "P’Nut But’r," and "All Aboard." Splittberger-Rosen
studied with Mandat several years ago as part of her sabbatical.
"His compositions use new clarinet techniques in charming ways," she
says.
Beckman is a freelance performer in the Midwest, is an accompanist
for Pro Musica and Wausau Conservatory’s Choralation Choir, and an
active member of the Wisconsin Music Teachers Association. In
addition to her UWSP degree in music, she earned a master’s degree
in vocal accompanying and coaching from UW-Milwaukee.
Splittberger-Rosen has taught at UWSP since 1984. She appears
regularly on Wisconsin Public Radio and throughout the U.S. as a
chamber musician, soloist and clarinet instructor. She has received
international acclaim as a member of the Uwharrie
Clarinet-Percussion Duo and is also a member of Trio Canna. She
advises the UWSP chapter of the Delta Omicron International Music
Fraternity. She earned degrees from Michigan State University and
the Eastman School of Music.
