International Becoming an Outdoors-Woman
program offers adventure trip to Mexico
The International Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program at the
University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is offering a new “Destinations”
adventure trip to fish in the Sea of Cortez. Women interested in
learning to saltwater fish in a patient, supportive atmosphere are
invited to attend this one-of-a-kind journey to Loreto, Mexico from
February 14-19, 2009.
In addition to fishing, participants will also have the opportunity to
snorkel around the coral reef of Coronado Island, kayak. and take a
whale-watching tour on the Pacific side of the Baja peninsula.
Activities are led by pre-approved outfitters who understand the
BOW program philosophy.
“This trip is designed for beginners ages 18 to 80 plus,” said Peggy Farrell,
International BOW director. “Women enjoy learning with other women and
traveling with like-minded individuals. BOW Destinations programs serve
this special niche by combining adventure and education in an affordable way.”
According to trip leader and biologist Kevin Wallenfang, February is an
outstanding time of the year to catch such “in-shore” species as roosterfish,
snapper, grouper, jack crevalle, and yellowtail. While not the “primetime”
of year to fish them, other good possibilities include dorado, tuna, marlin
and sailfish. In fact, literally thousands of species of fish swim the waters
around Loreto and can be caught at any time throughout the year.
The registration fee is $1,769 per person and includes roundtrip airfare
from Los Angeles to Loreto, lodging, and all activities. A brochure with
details is available at

BOW is a nonprofit program that began in Wisconsin in 1991 and has since
expanded to workshops held in 40 states, 6 Canadian provinces, and New
Zealand. Tens of thousands of women have participated in the program,
many of them saying they discovered aspects of themselves they didn’t
know existed as a result of their experiences.
