Musicof the Twentieth Century

Gustav Klimt, The Kiss 1907-08

The Twentieth Century is by far the most eclectic period in all of western music history. It has been a century of great invention and experimentation. There is nothing new in that: musicians have always been prone to experimenting. But in the twentieth century, so many parts of the world were opened to so many other parts! It is the mixing of influences from around the world that has led to this century of amazing musical diversity.

This course examines the major trends in western music in the twentieth century, beginning with the seeds planted in the late 19th century in Europe, and moving forward as elements from all over the world are added. We will hear music affected by art, poetry and literature, politics and revolution, psychology and Eastern religions, to name a few influences.
