Virtual Private Networking (VPN)
VPN stands for Virtual Private Networking. VPN establishes a
secure remote access connection to the UWSP Network. This allows
UWSP students, faculty and staff to access some network resources
from off-campus.
VPN at UWSP is used as part of an ongoing program to improve security both
of user information (password, personal data, etc.) and of the UWSP Network.
Although discussion and plans for VPN have been in the works for a while, an
abrupt implementation was forced by the Nimda virus in September 2001. Nimda
exposed known weak points in our security and VPN will help reduce future risks.
VPN is for off campus users. This does NOT include RAS users as they as
technically "on campus" as they dial-in. VPN must be used by those accessing
UWSP via another ISP (Internet Service Provider). Students, faculty and staff
that would like to access their H: drives (students only), on-line library
resources, web resources, etc...will need to establish a VPN connection to
successfully access this information.
