Devonian

Limestones and shales north of Milwaukee are the only Devonian units in Wisconsin. Some of these contain natural asphalt, the only hydrocarbon occurrence in Wisconsin. Early geologic literature also mentioned a tiny exposure of Mississippian rocks at one locality along the lakeshore.
