Intense rainfall during Hurricane Mitch triggered a deadly debris flow (lahar) at Casita Volcano, Nicaragua, on October 30, 1998 (see photo for a view of the aftermath of this flow).  This fast-moving lahar killed more than 2,000 people as it swept through the villages of El Porvenir and Rolando Rodriguez.
