Chisos Mountains

This is an high elevation "biotic island", where the forests contain many endemic organisms that have evolved in isolation due to the surrounding "desert sea".  There are also many interesting geologic formations here.

All participants must take at least two of the three hiking routes here to experience this distinctive landscape.  Click the map below for greater detail; click the browser's "Back" button to return.

There is a large gift shop here, so this is the ideal place to acquire souvenirs that will not be bulky, damaged, or lost during earlier backcountry sojourns.
