COURSE SCORES
Your
field grade derives from three equally-weighted components; field participation (30%),
field notebook (30%), and a post-trip exhibition (30%). Your mere attendance at BOTH
pre-departure class meetings (Friday, 08DEC and Friday, 14DEC) is worth an additional 5%,
and the final 5% comes from a "syllabus quiz" that I shall administer by Friday,
08DEC00.
I
use the 4 point scoring scale, the same as you are familiar with for grade point
calculations.
Pretty
obviously, we have no scores yet. Below are example score
reports.
After
hauling you 2000 miles to experience new landscapes, we expect 100% participation on ALL
activities. Although there will be activities on some
occasions that separate the geologists, biologists, and the geographers, no
one
should expect to sit behind as a "camp jay". Plan to come along on
the following major field excusions (attendance is ):
You
will experience escalating excursion distances during the trip; you must attend all
excursions. Wellness was part of your GDRs, so you know how to prepare yourself
physically by working out BEFORE embarking with us. You will receive NO
participation grade exemption from any obligatory trip; this is non-negotiable. [BACK]
We
included with your trip fees a field notebook. You are to use and submit this, and
nothing else,
for your field notes. At the MANDATORY pre-trip meetings you shall receive
instruction about appropriate inclusions; this is not a "trip diary" of
"who gossiped what to whom"; it is your collection of data and first-hand
observations that will, if you do it properly, serve well for future analysis.
This
book has weather-resistant pages, but you should ALWAYS use pencil on it. Ink will
smudge, run, and fade. Along with your notes, tabular data recordings, and on-site
computations, you have our encouragement to include a FEW
photographes or other images that you believe are particularly supportive.
YOU
MUST USE AND SUBMIT YOUR ASSIGNED FIELD BOOK;
ALTERNATIVES ARE ACCEPTABLE. [BACK]
Upon
completion of the excursion, we assume and encourage that you will share your findings and
experiences with others back here at home, and elsewhere. Most of you have already
received some considerable training in publicity vehicles, such as web sites, lecture
graphics, and personal discussions. These are valuable skills! We want you to
construct some kind of graphic public exhibition of what you experienced, and share it
with others who could not accompany you.
We
allow some latitude for the exhibition format. It is your choice as to whether you
submit a paper poster, electronic display (e.g., PowerPoint, HTML, etc.), or some other
communication format.
Whatever
media you select, you must ensure that your final submission is suitable for presentation
to the public. PROOFREAD your work! BE SURE TO INCLUDE FULL AND PROPER
CITATIONS. We will probably place your product in a public display, and
name will appear with it. [BACK]

compliance with recent UW System privacy policy, the Class ID# is NOT the genuine UWSP
ID#. Class ID# here will not match with student name in the Records office.
Enrolled class members received instruction for translating Class ID#. It remains
the student's responsibility to know this procedure. |
