PROTEROZOIC TECTONISM

Modern tectonic processes dominated the Proterozoic Eon. By 2.5 Ga, continental shields had  developed as a result of Archean collisions, crustal melting and development of granitic crust. The Proterozoic was marked by orogenesis (mountain building), supercontinent assembly and rifting. Proterozoic rocks occur on all the continents and provide the greatest abundance of mineral wealth.

We will investigate a number of major tectonic features in the Proterozoic including:

RODINIA

GONDWANA

PAN AFRICAN OROGENY
