| Elia J Armacanqui-Tipacti |
 Dr. Elia J. Armacanqui-Tipacti, a native of Peru, is an Associate Professor of Spanish
at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the Department of Foreign
Languages. She received her B.A. in History from Universidad Mayor de San Marcos, in Lima and a second B.A. in Elementary teaching from Escuela Superior Juan XXIII, in Ica, Peru. She obtained her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a specialization in Latin American literature, Medieval and Golden Age literature with an emphasis in Colonial Literature. She also holds a minor in Portuguese and Brazilian literatures. Professor Armacanqui-Tipacti has worked extensively on nun's manuscripts from the colonial period.
Dr. Armacanqui-Tipacti's scholarship and professional involvement in
the area of women's studies has been prolific, including a book, Sor María Manuela de Santa Ana published in 1999,
numerous articles and papers, and frequent presenter and panel
participant at conferences and workshops. She has worked
extensively to research the manuscripts of nuns from the colonial
period as a means to uncover the silenced women's voices from the
past. Dr. Armacanqui-Tipacti's contributions at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the area of women of color are numerous. She has served as a faculty member of the Equity and Affirmative Action Committee for three years, as a faculty adviser for the Student Alliance for Latino Studies and Advancement (S.A.L.S.A.), as the Spanish Club adviser, as a mentor to minority students, and as a member of the Portage County Cultural Festival. She has played a major role in bringing to campus in March 2003 the film "Seņorita Extraviada" (Missing Women) through the Mexico Solidarity Network. The film documented the culture of violence against women in Juarez and their struggle for justice. She was also a member of the Steering Committee of the October 2005 and the keynote speaker at the Wisconsin Women Care Conference organized by the Wisconsin Nicaragua Partners of the Americas, Inc. based at UW-Stevens Point. Dr. Armacanqui-Tipacti's commitment to improving the status and climate for women at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and the community was demonstrated significantly when she organized a collaborative Poetry and Art Exhibition titled "Elimination of All Forms of Violence Against Women" aimed at raising awareness of the violence faced by women locally and globally. Her efforts resulted in the collaboration of eight academic departments, three colleges, several administrative units, and numerous student organizations to make the Poetry and Art Exhibition an interdisciplinary event that strengthened the university community and culture. In March 4, 2006, the University of Wisconsin System recognized Dr. Elia J. Armacanqui-Tipacti for her outstanding contributions to the UW-System and Women of Color in Education.
