Description: Analyze and evaluate federal and state policies and laws pertaining to Wisconsin American Indian tribes and band members’ treaty rights and civil rights, particularly in respect to culture, language, and education.

The main objective of this course is to meet the mandates of PI34.15(4)(c)1, and Act 31 (1989) as stipulated in Wisconsin Statute 118.19(8), requiring that all licensed teachers obtain instruction in “the history, culture and tribal sovereignty of the federally recognized American Indian tribes and bands located in the state.” To that end, specific topics will be introduced, key terms will be defined, important historical concepts and laws will be described, and activities will be directed, particularly to assist teachers in developing curriculum and instruction for all students from preschools through secondary schools. 

Prereq:  EDUC 205  (waived for licensed teachers)
