| Description: | Communication…it is what separates us from the animals. As humans, we have the ability to create and use symbols to represent objects, actions, and ideas. In fact, we are using symbols on an almost constant basis, using them to communicate with each other and with ourselves. Although we are essentially surrounded by symbols in our personal and professional lives, rare are the times when we reflect on how we use them or on how others use them. The area of General Semantics (GS) focuses on the process of symbol use or misuse in communication.
Use of GS principles can help you become a better listener and improve your ability to express yourself. Its applications can be used professionally, by helping you become more effective in explaining concepts, providing directions, etc. and in helping individual students learn to express themselves more clearly. Applications in your personal life abound! Whether it is improving your ability to relate to your family or improving your ability to discern the messages being conveyed by others or through the media (television advertisements, newspapers, magazines, etc.), GS principles can help! This online course is designed to explore the communication process through the lens of General Semantics. It will include listening or viewing select lectures from prominent authorities in GS; participating in online discussions; and discovering applications of GS in day-to-day experiences. This is a two-credit course. If interested, a third credit can be earned by completing an independent project. The nature of the project is determined by you and the instructor.
