Description: This workshop is designed for practicing special educators and speech-language pathologists who are in need of updating their skills in the area of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Assistive Technology (AT). Children with complex communication needs present unique challenges within the classroom setting. This workshop will address the functional communication and academic needs of non-verbal children. Participants will gain a working knowledge of AAC and AT. In addition, the participants will enhance their knowledge in ways of providing greater opportunities for their students to participate and communicate more fully in their school environment. Modes of instruction will include lectures, small group discussions, case study presentations, assigned readings, video presentations, and "hands on" lab experiences with various AAC devices and computer programs
