Description: Reading and Writing - those magic processes - are together again!  The guiding principle for this course. As a group, we will be exploring, with an eye to revealing, what reading and writing are together and separately.

Reading & Writing Together is a course designed and appropriate for teachers K-12 from all specialties and subjects--not only those in Language Arts!!

Course Objectives:
• Define literacy in many and rich ways
   -by comparing/contrasting reading and writing,
   -by considering and destroying literacy myths
   -by situating these two processes in modern history and in a range of contexts
   -by exploring the nature of genre
• Consider the obstacles – disciplinary and educational-that keep literacy in separate boxes.
• Provide a forum for inspiring and thinking about the practical development of classroom literacy communities-in every subject and at every level

A Sampling of Topics:
• The synergy of reading and writing together
• A brief history of modern reading and writing instruction
• Connecting skills with meaning (includes phonics and phonemic awareness)
• Common myths of reading instruction and practice
• Common myths of writing instruction and practice
• School of Health Care Professions your classroom literacy community
• Reading and writing in the disciplines/professions
• Judging the effectiveness of your literacy program in your classroom

Course Approach:
We have designed Reading & Writing Together to encourage teacher-students to take a collegial approach.  We have much to learn from on another's experiences and questions.
