Presenters Represented Numerous Agencies And Organizations Including The Wisconsin Legislature, The Department Of Natural Resources, Utilities, School Districts, Conservation Organizations, And The Department Of Public Instruction. Participants Were Sent Resource Materials In Advance And Three Students From The Milwaukee Conference Were Sent To The Earth Summit In Brazil As A Result. Conference Evaluations Were Positive And Both Sites Plan To Continue The Conference In The Future. A Third Site, Ashland, Is Holding A Conference In 1992. These Classes Located And Constructed The "center". The Physical Design Consists Of Display Cases And Boards Located In An Open Area Of The School. Environmental Science Students Collected Information And Prepared Displays - Often In Conjunction With A Required Environmental Action Project- For Use In The CEAA. Information Collected I Being Kept In The Environmental Science Classroom For Continued Use By Students And Staff. Some Students Presented Project Work To Elementary Classrooms In The District As Part Of A Fledgling "environmental Awareness Year: 1991WEEB Grant: $6,960 Contribution: $10,041 Title: Classroom Recycling Org: Barneveld School District Grant: 2-0287-EE Contact: Michelle Walsdorf Addr1: 105 W. Douglas St. Addr2: Barneveld WI 53507- Phone: 608-924-4711 Synopsis: Thirty-five Participants In The Classroom Recycling Project Received Inservice Training On Recycling And Recycling Activity Development They Were Tested On The Materials Presented And Lessons Were Submitted, Evaluated, And Modified. The Lessons Have Been Integrated Into The Present Curriculum. Through Surveys And Discussions, The Project Director And The DNR Consultant Found The Project To Have Been A Success As 100% Of Teachers Reported Using Their Lessons, Recycling In The Room, And Being Satisfied With The Recycling Programs Developed. Recycling And The Use Of Related Activities Takes Place In The 1992-1993 School Year Also. The First Session Provided These Leaders Of Diverse Backgrounds With A Variety Of Resources And Ideas To Promote Environmental Awareness In Troops From Kindergarten Through Senior Levels (see Appendix). The Second Session Developed Skills Useful In Researching, Planning, And Implementing An Action Project. As Indicated By Their Responses In The Training Evaluations, This Gave The Leaders The Confidence To Guide The Girls Through The Same Process. The Number Of Participation Patches Purchase (1,204) Is An Indication For The Number Of Girls participating. They Developed A Question And Answer Sheet To Be Used As Students And Citizens Walked On The Trail. A Trail Activity Guide Was Developed And Over 1000 People Completed Trail Question Sheets. Trail User Were From A Wide Cross Section Of The Population; Many Were People Who Were Camping In The Castle Rock County Park Across The Road From The Trail. The In-service Dealt With Protection Against Communicable Diseases, OSHA Rules And DIHLR Standards Dealing With Blood Borne Diseases And Proper Disposal Of Chemicals And Infectious Waste. Ten Of These Instructors Who Deal With Blood And Body Fluid Products Were Allowed To Develop A Curriculum And Information To Be Shared And Adopted By The Rest Of The Instructors. Videos And Printed Materials Were Purchased T Be Shared And Given To Students Through Orientation And Infusion In Course Material And Clinic Manuals. This Information Was Shared With More Than 85 Students. Other Activities Include The WXPR Earth Fair, Live Broadcast Of A DNR Hearing On Noranda Mine Project In Oneida County, Live And Recorded Coverage Of The Midwest Renewable Energy Fair. The Project Has Resulted In Exposure Of A Mass Audience To In-depth Coverage Of A Wide Variety Of Issues, From Environmental Degradation To Stewardship Of Land, Energy Conservation And Alternative Energy, And The Preservation Of Water Quality. Participants Developed An Awareness And Knowledge O Environmental Issues. Through Workshop Activities, They Learned And Practiced Skills And Developed An Implementation Plan To Share Their Acquired Knowledge And Skills With Others. In Addition To Participant Workshop Resources, A Council Resource Library Was Developed To Assist Participants In Carrying Out Their "back Home Commitment". The Projected Impact Of Participant Projects/ "back Home Commitments" Is 2500 People. Year: 1991WEEB Grant: $4,973 Contribution: $3,544 Title: Focus On Forests Org: Dept. It Was Designed To Help Visitors Gain Awareness Of Forest Resources, How The Resources Are Managed, And The Impact Of Various Practices. Forty-five Naturalist Were Trained At A 2-day Workshop To Assist In The Effective Use Of The Materials. A Resource Notebook Was Also Developed To Assist Them In The Development Of Their Own Programs. A Professionally Produced "focus On Forests" Slide Show Was Developed And Shown To Park Visitors. Several Exhibits Were Made For Use At Each Part, And Supportive Materials Were Provided To Foresters To Assist Them In Teaching The Concepts Of The Program. All Objectives Were Met Except For One. The Topographic Map Objective 1.2 Did Not Work Out As Well As Hoped. Mastery Was Not Attained But The Students Did Get Exposed T The Maps. It Was Meaningful. Some Of The Worksheets Were Already Available. Some Were Redone To Make Them Useable For First And Fifth Graders. The Trips To Maitland Park Were Favored By The Students. Activity 1.1.2 Was Redone So The Students Could Work In The Gym Instead Of On The Playground In Bad Weather. They Used Yard And Masking Tape Which Worked Very Well. The Students Met Instant Success. A Corollary Objective Was To Help To Protect Geneva Lake As An Environmental, Economic And Esthetic Resource By Preparing Students To Become Environmentally Aware Citizens. They Conducted Two Training Sessions Which Involved 74 Educators In Hands-on Activities Which They Could Use In Their Classrooms. The CEEC Determined To Develop EE Resource Kits For School And Public Access. Three Kits Were Selected: The "wolf Box", The "little Wetlands, Little Treasures" Kit, And The "solar Electric Education" Kit. The Northern Waters Library System Also Developed Kits On Wetlands, Birds, Wildlife Tracking, And Recycling. Following The Play, Teachers Participated In An Inservice Program Designed To Encourage And Instruct Them In The Use Of Theater To Teach Environmental Issues. Each Teacher Was Given A Copy Of Curriculum Materials As A Guide For Incorporating Environmental Education Into Their Classroom Employing Theatrical Games And Student Written And Produced Plays With Minimal Use Of Costumes And Sets. The Project Culminated In A Production On The Stage At Big Top Chautauqa In Bayfield, WI, In Conjunct Year: 1991WEEB Grant: $7,000 Contribution: $3,850 Title: Greenbelt Video Project Org: Dane County Regional Planning Comm. About 16 Hours Of Material Was Gathered, Including Hearings And Speeches, On The Street Comments, 15 In-depth Interviews, And Illustrative Shots. These Have Been Written And Edited With Narration, Graphics, And Music Into A 28-minute Program With Broadcast And Tape Distribution Potential. the Program Provides Basic Information About The Problems Being Discussed, Along With A Brief History And Several Case Studies, Then Presents Comment And Potential Solutions From Various Viewpoints. Staff Members Were Inserviced In Environmental Educational Awareness. An Environmental Education Curriculum Was Cooperatively Developed. The Project Director Is Now Taking The Materials And Curriculum To Individual Classrooms And Small Groups Of Teachers To Demonstrate And Model The Teaching Techniques Of Infusion Into Existing Curriculum. Students, Staff, And Community Businesses Participated In Community-wide Earth Day Clean-up Projects. At Keshena Primary School, A Small 1/2 Acre Park And Nature Trail Was Made Out Of A Wooded Area That Had Four Dump Truck Loads Of Trash And Refuse In It. Year: 1991WEEB Grant: $10,355 Contribution: $2,650 Title: Health & Envir Issues Associated Org: Madison Dept. To Achieve This Goal The Project Team Developed And Performed A Workshop On The Project Topic. In Addition, Educational Materials Were Written To Provide Ongoing Education To Madison Residents On The Topic. Initially, The Workshop Was Targeted To Community Groups, Landlords And Property Managers. We Eventually Made The Workshop Available To The General Public After We Received Few Registrants From The Initial Group. A Total Of 13 People Attended The Four Hour Workshop. We Received Positive Feedback From The Workshop Participants. Additionally, They Completed Taping 6 Segments To Be Featured On Outdoor Wisconsin. They Have Created Public Service Announcements For Both Radio And TV Which Are Undergoing Final Edits And Will Be Made Available To The Local Outlets By The First Of The Year. The Children's Video/play Will Be Taped In October And Ready For The Public By The End Of November. As An Addition To This Project, They Created A Video For Adults Which Is Complete And Being Disseminated. Narrated Slide Programs Were Produced By Each Group. Each Group Prepared Stream Reports And Then Shared Results And Slide Programs With The Other Subject Are Classes. The Studies Completed By The Students Showed Chemical Parameters Within Normal Ranges But A Lack Of The Biodiversity Which Would Be Expected For This Water Quality. An Itinerary Was Prepared For The Bus And Walking Tour Of The Pike River Watershed From The Mouth Of The River To Near One Of Its Several Sources. The Booklet Was Mailed To 900 People In The Wisconsin School System Environmental Education Network, And About 100 Other Conference Participants. Although A Very Time Consuming Project, The Booklet Provide Summaries On Partnerships In Formal Education, Environmental Education In Nonformal Settings, Resource Networks, Issue Investigation And Action, And Partnerships With The Arts. These Parcels Have Become On-site Environmental Education Labs Or Students In Grades K-5. All Participating Staff (35) Were In-serviced In Ecological Information And Strategies For Using These Outdoor Classrooms Through An Awareness Tour Of The Areas Conducted By Ms Lorrie Otto. Also, There Was A Follow-up Slide Presentation Outlining The Stages Of Development In Creating The Three Ecosystems, Units Of Study Were Developed Through The Science Curriculum, And A Commemorative Project Booklet Was Made. Six Elementary Teachers Were Chosen And Introduced To Several Prominent Environmental Curriculum Projects And Materials. The Teachers Were Then Divided Into Two Teams And Used As Specialists During A Five Week Summer School At 2 Elementary Schools. Lessons Were Taught To 16 Students K-6. Final Lessons Were Summarized Into A Curriculum Manual (sent To The Wisconsin Center For Environmental Education At UWSP. Because Of Inclement Weather, The Classes Were Designed For Indoor As Well As Outdoor Use. All Four School Districts Receive At Least One Of Three Recycling Education Inservices From The Project Consultant And Cooperating Team. Three Of The Schools Went On To Implement In-school Paper Recycling Programs. Whitehall's Sunset Elementary School Participated In A Recycling Logo Contest. Winning Designs Were Printed On Recycled Paper Placemats For Use In Local Restaurants. High School Students, Along With Adult Advisors, Worked Together To Produce A Paper Recycling Videotape For Use On The Local Cable TV Access Channel. One Fourth Of The Trail Was Covered With Crushed Limestone For Wheelchair Access. The Balance Of The Trail Was Wood Chipped. A Corresponding Guide For Public Use Has Been Developed For Spring And Summer And One For Fall Is In The Process. Both Are Subject To Refinement. A Year Round Pre, Post, And On The Trail Activities Handbook For Teachers K-12 has been completed. The Students Created Radon Videos, Were Tested On Radon Knowledge, Developed A Parent Awareness Survey, Constructed Informational Posters, Test 81% Of Middle School Homes, And Graphed And Mapped Results. They Learned About Local Environmental Issues And Resources By Visiting A Sewage Treatment Plant, Wisconsin Electric Co., An Incinerator, And Riveredge (nature Center). Evaluation Results Were Positive As Teacher Became Aware Of Efforts Of Communities To Use Tax Dollars To Preserve Resources And Ways To Infuse Environmental Issues Into The Curriculum. Environmental Curriculum Resources Were Reviewed, Purchased, And Added To Curriculum Libraries In Each Of The 5 District Schools. Developed A Pilot Test Administered To WI Teachers, 5th Graders, And 11th Graders. Four Pilot Versions Were Developed And One Instrument For Each Population Will Be Developed. Thus The Student Assessment Goals Were On Target And The Teacher Assessment Objectives Were Surpassed. Copies Of The Student And Teacher Instruments Were Included With The Final Report. During This Workshop, Agency And Non-agency Staff Presented Hands-on Sessions And Informational Talks On Various Aspects Of The River, Including History, Ecology And Contemporary Issues. Participants Canoed The River, Conducted Water Chemistry And Invertebrate Sampling, And Toured The Rhinelander Paper Mill And Rice Reservoir. They Also Interviewed Local Citizens To Investigate And Analyze Relevant Local Environmental Issues. Participants Received Numerous Resource Materials, And A Binder Comprised O Collected Curriculum And Reference Materials. An observation platform/ rest area was also built by the students (with some help from the Wonewoc Area Betterment Club). Three interpretive signs were installed on the platform. |
