Environmental Science
Licensure Update
Addressing the need for options for
in-service teachers to obtain
environmental science teaching
licensure is has been the main
priority of the Environmental
Science Teacher Network this year.
Progress includes the development of
an add-on license option for
Environmental Studies (615) at the
EXCEL Center at UW-Oshkosh. The ES
licensure program for pre-service
and in-service teachers at
UW-Stevens Point is also being
revised. To better meet the needs of
in-service educators, courses will
be offered online. The programs are
still being refined and finalized.
Updates will be posted on this web
page:

Wisconsin Environmental Literacy
Development Continues The Wisconsin No Child Left Inside
Coalition is working to develop an Environmental Literacy Plan for
Wisconsin that will address the environmental education needs of
Wisconsin's pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade schools and will pay
special attention to creating more opportunities to get kids outside.
The Plan will recommend a comprehensive strategy to ensure every child
graduates with the environmental skills and knowledge needed to
contribute to a sustainable future. Deb Weitzel, environmental science
teacher in the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District, represents
the Wisconsin Environmental Science Teacher Network in the Coalition.
Deb’s main priority is to ensure the interests of environmental science
educators are addressed in the plan. For additional information about the
Coalition visit:

DPI Environmental Education Consultant in Action
Victoria Rydberg filled the
Wisconsin Department of Public
Instruction position of
Environmental Education Consultant
in June 2010. This position has been
vacant for more than 15 years so
Victoria is looking for input from
the EE community about needs in the
field for training and support.
Victoria will continue to work on EE
integration across curriculum at all
levels as well as with environmental
science teachers (in conjunction
with Shelley Lee, DPI Science
Consultant). Environmental literacy
is a priority for Victoria. You can
follow Victoria on
Facebook and on
Twitter or email her at
Victoria.Rydberg@dpi.wi.gov
and request to be added to the EE
distribution list. Get resources at
the department web site at:
