Renovations at Treehaven this year put Winter Workshop in the “tension zone.” For the first time, the Central Wisconsin Environmental Station hosted the 2010 WAEE Winter Workshop in Amherst Junction, Wisconsin.

The theme for this year’s workshop, “Healthy Communities,” brought in some wonderful and dynamic presenters. The three themes included: Natural Communities, Local Foods, and Service Learning. In total there were 15 presentations enjoyed by 76 workshop attendees. Keeping with the theme, the workshop provided meals prepared with as many locally produced and organic ingredients as possible. The event kicked off with a viewing of “Fresh-the Movie” followed by a local foods panel discussion on local, organic, and sustainable agriculture.
Brutal Gormet
Saturday provided a beautiful sunny, yet chilly, day to give the proper ambiance of the WAEE Winter Workshop. That didn’t stop the Brutal Gourmet. He came out and did not let participants down. The keynote presentation was given by one of our own, Clayton Russell of Northland College who provided a wonderful presentation, “Minding Our Place.” The afternoon continued with another tradition: WAEE Winter Olympics. Before dinner three-hours of “free play” gave participants time in the outdoors. After dinner there was something for everyone: a wine tasting, a Nertz Tournament, and live music at Sunset Lodge. All the while, the WAEE annual Winter Workshop tradition of a Nertz tournament brought together ten pairs to compete for the title: 2010 Nertz Champions. Tying the festivities together, Cannonball, blue-grass music, kept folks tapping their feet and enjoying the scene.

Sunday morning gave participants a wonderful selection of concurrent sessions topping off enlightening discussions around local foods, service learning, and the beauty of our natural communities in Wisconsin. The whole weekend was memorable for all.
