Interpreting Iowa's Scenic Byways
October 7-8, 2009
Ames, Iowa
A scenic byway with a well planned interpretive system enhances the experience for travelers. This positive experience leads to support, return visits, longer visits, and good public relations. Jim Buchholz and Ron Zimmerman facilitated a two-day workshop in Ames, Iowa to explore the development of interpretive plans and options for scenic byways.
Workshop topics included:
- The Fundamentals of Heritage Interpretation
- Telling the Stories of our Byways: Interpretive Planning
- Connecting to Scenic Byway Travelers: Interpretive Media Options
- Scenic Byway Facilities: Visitor Centers and Exhibits
- Working with Consultants
In addition, participants visited an actual interpretive site at a restored gas station, motel, and cafe called Reed/Niland Corner in nearby Colo, Iowa.
