School Forest Coordinators

These school forests coordinators have a specific responsibility to the school forest in their district. A few of them are full-time coordinators while many of them have other responsibilities in addition to the school forest . They are excellent resources to learn more about the opportunities available at your school forest.

School Forest "Spotlight"

Bjornson Education-Recreation Center (Menomonie School Forest) (PDF)
The Bjornson Education-Recreation Center is a 443 acre school forest owned by the School District of the Menomonie Area. The property was purchased in the early 1970s from Ed Bjornson of the Spring Valley Lumber Company. Under the guidance of Dave Schiotz (Environmental Education Coordinator, 1971-96) the school district obtained matching grants through the Land and Water Conservation Department. For the past 33 years, the Bjornson Education-Recreation Center has allowed students of the Menomonie Area to experience the natural environment.

Boston School Forest (PDF)
The fresh scent pine in the air, the pipping of a cardinal, the swish of skis on powdery snow, the flash of a blue jay and the eager voices of children exploring the outdoors, these are all to found at the Boston School Forest.

Elcho School Forest (PDF)
The Elcho School Districts owns four school forests. It has chosen to develop one of those as the primary education site. The Elcho School Forest consists of approximately 80 acres of beautiful northern hardwood forest. During the past six years, school district staff, school board members, and the community have worked tirelessly to develop the educational potential of the school forest. They are near completion on their environmental education center, hold annual school forest days for grades 3 - 6, and continue to work on a school forest curriculum. They approached the school forest development in a step-wise, sequential manner.

Rahr Memorial School Forest (PDF)
Located along the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan, the Rahr Memorial School Forest in Manitowoc has been an outdoor education facility for fifty years. Manitowoc students of all ages enjoy trips to the school forest where they can explore, learn, and appreciate nature. The Rahr Memorial School Forest is owned and operated by the Manitowoc Public School District.

Tri-County School Forest (PDF)
The Tri-County School Forest is approximately 400 acres located between Plainfield and Babcock. It is an exceptional school and community resource. Programs such as this one take considerable time and effort to build. The impact of the school forest is felt by all the students in the district and members of the community. The information below is provided to outline the various, interrelated efforts that have been undertaken to create the Tri-County School Forest program.

Wausau School Forest (PDF)
The Wausau School Forest was started in 1941 by the late G.W. Bannerman, who was the superintendent of schools. Over the years, interest in the School Forest has grown steadily among teachers, students and the community. People realize the great motivation and interest students (ages 3 to adult) have when they are learning outdoors.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood (PDF)
The Wittenberg-Birnamwood School District is embracing the opportunities provided by its school forest. This school forest program, like many others across the state, is greatly expanding because of the hard work of teachers, administrators, and community members. They recognize the incredible educational value of their school forest.
