These workshops are designed for new and continuing plan commission members, local government officials, planning and zoning staff, and other interested persons. The workshops will focus on the roles and responsibilities of the plan commission with particular attention on day-to-day decisions such as rezones and conditional use permits.  Time will be provided to address local planning and zoning issues.

April 11, 2012 – Legislation and Case Law Update

This series of programs is designed to keep local government officials up to date on local land use planning and zoning issues that affect their communities. Each session will be moderated by UW-Extension’s Local Government Center Staff and will provide ample opportunity for participant questions and comments. You will receive a packet of printed materials that will be referred to throughout the live teleconference program. Register by mail, fax or phone to attend at a public WisLine site convenient to you.

The Center for Land Use Education is partnering with the Wisconsin Towns Association to offer four educational seminars aimed at town and small village officials. Participants will learn about the roles and responsibilities of the plan commission, recent updates to the comprehensive planning law, subdivision ordinances, and other land use controls. An update on current legislative actions will also be provided. To learn more, download the seminar brochure. This workshop is designed for new and continuing plan commission members, local government officials, planning and zoning staff, and other interested persons. The workshop will focus on the roles and responsibilities of the plan commission and related procedural requirements. County staff will provide an update on shoreland zoning (NR 115) and farmland preservation.

Wednesday, May 11, 2011, Gooseblind, Green Lake, WI, Green Lake County

This workshop is designed for new and continuing plan commission and zoning board members. The workshop is intended to provide information about the roles and responsibilities of local land use officials and Wisconsin court decisions that impact their decision-making. The workshop will include several interactive exercises and plenty of time to discuss local issues.


PLAN COMMISSION WORKSHOPS

Workshops are designed for newly appointed commissioners, veteran commissioners tackling complex issues, and professional educators and planners whose job it is to support local commissions. 

For newly established commissions, CLUE offers a basic plan commission workshop which can be tailored to address:

  • Establishing a Plan Commission
  • Recruiting and Retaining Quality Commissioners
  • Roles and Responsibilities of the Plan Commission
  • Comprehensive Planning Basics and the Planning Process
  • Encouraging Public Participation
  • Open Meetings and Public Records Laws
  • Ethical Conduct and Decision-Making

For veteran commissioners, CLUE can help to address complex issues such as:

  • Zoning, Conditional Uses, Non-Conformities, and Subdivision Regulations
  • Consistency and the Comprehensive Plan
  • Plan Implementation, Monitoring, and Enforcement
  • Intergovernmental Cooperation
  • Property Rights
  • And other relevant topics.
