Facilities and Equipment
The Advanced Computer Lab (ACL) is a state-of-the-art teaching computer lab, which also supports a wide range of spatial information system research projects.
The lab is used by many different classes from all of the CNR disciplines during the semesters. During the breaks, the lab is used by UWSP faculty or outside parties to host training courses.
Main Teaching Room
There are twenty-three student computers, a teaching station with computer, two large digitizing tablets (48"x36" and 60"x48" - on loan to Geography), a light table and a ceiling-mounted projector in the main part of the lab. The teaching station includes a DVD player, VCR and document image presenter. Three printers, including a high capacity laser printer, a high resolution color laser printer and color inkjet printer are available to students. The desks are arranged in a way to encourage interactive work in small groups, and provides plenty of space for students to place workbooks, handouts, and maps. (Technical Specifications)
Research Support Room
There are five workstations available to support faculty and student research including a graphics station, including flatbed scanner, to accommodate multi-media and graphic arts needs. Faculty from all over the College have access to our three research printers: a high capacity laser printer, a high resolution color laser printer, a large format plotter (42"), and our wide format scanner (40"). (Technical Specifications)
Networking
Our lab is networked via 100MB BaseT fibre-optics to the rest of the University. Three servers support the ACL's and College's needs, including the Online Advanced Spatial Information System (OASIS) server (for GIS/RS data warehousing).
GPS
The CNR has a variety of GPS units available including three CMT Alto-G12 real-time sub-meter units (using RTCM) and thirty-four Garmin GPSMAP 76S, WAAS capable units. These units are available for checkout via the CNR stockroom. We also make our Magellan MBS1 Base Station Data available to the public.
MOBILE PC's
The ACL maintains six HP5450 iPAQ Pocket PC's for mobile data collection and mobile GIS. The units have ESRI's ArcPAD mobile GIS software installed and are compatible with the Garmin GPSMAP 76S GPS units (connecting cables are available). Compact Flash (CF) expansion packs and WAAS enabled CF GPS cards are also available for use.
