The Fisheries and Water Resources major in the College of Natural Resources was extensively revised during the spring semester 2006 to respond to the changes that have occurred in the discipline over the last decade. We feel that the changes will have a significant positive impact on our students and stakeholders. The new options concentrate on the study of biological, physical, and chemical characteristics of rivers, streams, lakes, groundwater and the interaction of water with land.

Fisheries and Water Resources majors:

Fisheries

The Fisheries major includes the survey and management of fish and other aquatic organisms in freshwater lakes and streams. This major prepares you for a career as a fisheries biologist or a position in fisheries resource management. An MS degree will greatly increase employment potential and job responsibilities in fisheries.

Watershed Management

The Watershed Management major emphasizes the role that land plays in controlling water quantity and quality. Career possibilities include a land and water conservationist, hydrologist, or water resources manager.

Water Resources

The Water Resources major allows you to develop a program emphasizing the physical, chemical, or biological aspects of water resources management. With this major, you can pursue a variety of careers analyzing, managing, and improving water quantity and quality.

A minor is also available in Water Resources.

Licensing and Certification

Through appropriate selection of courses, you can meet the academic requirements for certification as a Certified Fisheries Professional (learn more at the American Fisheries Society website), Professional Hydrologist (Wisconsin & American Institute of Hydrology), or the federal guidelines for a Hydrologist (Office of Planning and Management).
