Graduate Assistantship in Environmental Education/Interpretation at Schmeeckle Reserve
The Schmeeckle Reserve Graduate Assistantship provides opportunities to teach and mentor undergraduate students, and to learn more about managing a visitor center and supervising staff, while pursuing a Masters of Science Degree in Natural Resources with an emphasis in Environmental Education and Interpretation. The assistantship is a 20-hour per week position that runs from August 28, 2011 to May 18, 2013. The graduate assistantship has both academic and administrative duties. On the academic side, the position will assist course instructors to teach and mentor a 3 credit Oral Interpretation Methods course, a 3-5 credit Interpretive Media course, and an Environmental Interpretation Practicum course taken for 3 or 12 credits. On the administrative side, the graduate assistant will assist with the operation and management of Schmeeckle Reserve, which includes training and supervising student staff, organizing community events, developing plans for improving visitor services, and coordinating research projects. Schmeeckle Reserve is a natural area with a public visitor center on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus. For more information visit the web site at www.uwsp.edu/schmeeckle. Requirements: • Undergraduate degree in natural sciences, environmental education, interpretation, or related field. • Minimum two years of practical experience in the environmental education/interpretation field, preferably at a recreational site such as a park, nature center, visitor center, museum, zoo, etc. • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. • Ability to plan and work both independently and as part of a team. • Demonstrated leadership skills and abilities. • Must work at Schmeeckle Reserve during summer of 2012 (requirement of the assistantship). • Must meet all minimum graduate student requirements of UWSP and the College of Natural Resources. • Skills preferred but not required include: supervisory experience, graphic design (using Adobe software), website design and maintenance, financial planning/budgeting. Compensation: Graduate assistants are paid approximately $13,124 for 12 months. This includes health insurance (with required student paid premiums) and an out-of-state tuition waiver (in 2010, tuition and fees for Wisconsin graduates was $4,028 compared to $8,913 for out-of-state). Minnesota residents pay the reciprocity tuition rate. The assistant has desk space in the Schmeeckle Reserve Visitor Center, with a computer, high-speed Internet, and Adobe CS4 design software.
