Dear
friends: As
Dean of the premier undergraduate natural resources program in
the nation, I would like to share some brief reflections of this
academic year's highlights and our prospects for future vitality.
Some highlights of the 1998-99 academic year---
- CNR integrated
core curriculum implemented, with new core courses being highly
successful.
- Outreach/extension
representative invited to participate in the CNR dean's council.
- $2.15 million
federal appropriation awarded to CNR to improve natural resources
and environmental management via technology-enhanced learning.
- Over 20 CNR
vision initiatives conceived by faculty for consideration and
potential implementation.
- CNR advisory
board developed task teams to plan and implement selected CNR
vision initiatives (Wisconsin Watersheds Center, Management Institute
for Land Use Decision Making, Natural Resources Leadership Program)
- CNR self
study and program review (performed every 5 years) completed successfully.
- 1999 UW Regents'
Excellence in Teaching Award nomination of CNR by UWSP campus.
- CNR Outreach
and Extension Plan submitted to UWEX and UWSP administration.
- CNR students
demonstrated excellence in learning via active participation in
courses, field and lab activities, internships, CNR student club
performance, etc. and student placement in jobs and graduate school.
Future vitality
in 2000 and beyond---
- Increasingly
important water quality and land use issues to address holistically
and with partner organizations and agencies.
- Continued
commitment to integrated environmental management via systems
approach.
- Continued
educational development and training in computer-based technology
and communication skills.
- CNR administrative
structure to help the College be the best it can be in serving
students, faculty and stakeholders.
- Personnel
policy upgrades to enhance professional development, personal
growth and job satisfaction.
- CNR public
relations plan and development plan to be developed and implemented
for future vitality and security.
Thanks to our faculy, staff and students, the College of Natural
Resources has had a tremendous year at the close of the millennium.
In the 21st century, in what might be characterized as the "Environmental
Century," I look forward enthusiastically to our working together
to continue building the premier natural resources and environmental
management institution of higher education available. Welcome
aboard to the future!
Best regards,
Victor D. Phillips,
Dean College of Natural Resources
