Strong But End in Tie With Falcons
Box
Score
UW-Stevens Point dominated from the start, but it
was UW-River Falls which had the final say at the end as the Falcons rallied
from a late two-goal deficit to force a 2-2 tie in Sundays Northern
Collegiate Hockey Association contest at Ice Hawks Arena.
The Pointers outshot the Falcons 16-0 in the first
period and went ahead 2-0 just 28 seconds into the second period. However,
UW-River Falls rallied with two goals from Jenna Scanlon in the final 7:28
of the third period and then fought off two Pointers power plays in
overtime to force the tie.
UW-Stevens Point, ranked third in the NCAA
Division III, is now 6-2-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the NCHA, while UW-River
Falls is 5-1-3 overall and 2-1-1 in the league.
The Pointers were in complete control for the
first period, but Falcons goaltender Amber Lindner was in perfect position
nearly every time, stopping 15 of 16 shots to keep the score 1-0. Lindners
only blemish came on a long, knuckling shot from Jamie Lewandowski that
fluttered over her right shoulder at the 15:10 mark of the period.
UW-Stevens Point went ahead 2-0 when Michelle
Sosnowski finished off a perfect pass from Nicole Grossmann early in the
second period. The Pointers appeared to be cruising along until Scanlon
scored the first of her goals off a pass from Kristen Juven. Scanlon added
another goal with 3:33 left in the third period, poking home loose puck in
front of the net on a power play.
The Falcons were whistled for a penalty with 1:41
left in the third period, but the Pointers were unable to convert the
opportunity. UW-Stevens Point also finished the game with a man advantage
for the final 1:08, but was just one-for-seven on power plays in the game.
Lindner made three saves in overtime and 33 for
the game, while UW-Stevens Points Amy Statz stopped 19 shots for the game,
including 10 in the third period. |
