Brown's Runner-up Finish Leads Pointers at UW-Whitewater Invitational

    Angie Brown placed runner-up at No. 2 singles to lead the UW-Stevens Point women�s tennis team to a fourth place performance in the eight-team UW-Whitewater Invitational on Saturday.

     Brown posted an opening round 6-3, 6-0 win over Holly DeBruin of UW-Oshkosh before beating Anne Berg of Wisconsin Lutheran 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinals. She lost to UW-La Crosse�s Erica Schmelzer 6-2, 6-3 in the title match.

     Mashell Ver Bockel and Sarah O�Melia won their opening match at No. 2 doubles with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Holly Kruschel and Alycia Springs of Wisconsin Lutheran before settling for fourth place. Elizabeth Stangl and Ann Robbins lost in the consolation final at No. 3 doubles.

     The Pointers also benefited from a pair of forfeits in opening round matches to Catherine Thornburg at No. 1 singles and Emily Bouche and Allison Popple and No. 1 doubles. Both finished fourth in their respective brackets.

     The Pointers finished with 16 team points while UW-La Crosse won the meet with 48 points. UW-Stevens Point plays at Lawrence on Tuesday.
