Pointers Sixth in WIAC for Third

Angie Brown and Mashell
VerBockel finished fourth at No. 2 doubles and were each among three
consolation champions in singles to lead UW-Stevens Point at the
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women�s tennis
championships Saturday and Sunday in Madison.
Brown and Ver Bockel teamed
for an 8-2 first round victory over Michelle Hohl and Julie Mirenda of
UW-Stout before suffering an 8-3 loss to Kara Theis and Maggie Seitz of
UW-Whitewater in the third place match.
In singles, Brown won the
consolation crown at No. 2 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Danielle Farchmin of
UW-Stout, while Ver Bockel rallied to defeat Hayek 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 for the
consolation title at No. 5.
Cathy Thornburg also came
from behind to claim a consolation title for the Pointers, beating Jenna
Bettmann of UW-Stout 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. She won an earlier match over
Michelle Baur of UW-Oshkosh 6-2, 6-1 that helped the Pointers hold off
the Titans and finish sixth of seven teams in the final standings. It
marked the third straight year and fifth time in six years that the
Pointers placed sixth.
UW-La Crosse won the team
championship, which combines dual meet play with tournament competition.
