Womens
Swimming Hopes for More Minneapolis Success
Having already achieved plenty of success at
the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center, the UW-Stevens Point
womens swimming and diving team looks for more this weekend when it
returns to Minneapolis for the NCAA Division III championships March
9-11.
The Pointers captured their first Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship since 2001 last month
in Minneapolis and are looking for their first top 10 nationals finish
since that same year.
All five of UW-Stevens Points relays earned
high seeds for the meet with the 200-yard medley relay of Liz Herder,
Jennie Roskopf, Beth Bard and Kelsey Crunstedt ranked second in the
country with a time of 1:46.85, which is just two-tenths of a second
behind top-seeded Kenyon (Ohio.). The 200-yard freestyle relay of Jerica
Crook, Bard, Crunstedt and Caitlin Hake is seeded fourth with a time of
1:36.43. Both times were established at the conference meet and set meet
records.
In addition, the 400-yard medley relay of
Herder, Roskopf, Meghan Walsh and Hake is seeded seventh. The 400-yard
freestyle relay is seeded 10th and the 800-yard freestyle relay is
ranked 14th.
Individually, Hake is seeded seventh in the
50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle events. Roskopf is ranked 10th
in both the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard breaststroke, while
Herder is seeded 11th in the 200-yard backstroke.
The womens team has never had a relay or
individual win a national title and had its best nationals finish in
2001 when it finished eighth overall. The meet runs Thursday through
Saturday with prelims each morning and finals in the evening.
