Men in Position for Seventh
Title, Women in Tight Race at WIAC Championships
UW-Stevens Point put itself in position for a
seventh consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men�s
swimming and diving title, while the women�s team is set to go down to
the wire with UW-La Crosse for the fifth straight year after Friday�s
competition in Minneapolis.
The Pointer men hold a solid lead over UW-La
Crosse after two days, while the women trail the Eagles by 28.5 points.
The UW-La Crosse women have edged the Pointers by narrow margins the
past four seasons. The meet concludes Saturday at the University of
Minnesota Aquatic Center.
Alex Anderson posted the fastest 100-yard
breaststroke time in the NCAA Division III this season with a conference
record-setting time of 56.10 seconds. The men�s team also had a
conference and school record-setting performance from the 800-yard
freestyle relay of Chase Grosse, Matt Grunwald, Ben Gensler and Tyler
Eloranta with a winning time of 6:54.18.
Garth Newport was a double winner for the
men�s team, capturing the title in the 100-yard backstroke in 54.22
seconds and his third straight 100-yard butterfly crown in 50.92
seconds. Gross added an individual title in the 200-yard freestyle in
1:42.63 and teamed with Newport, Anderson and Willie Clapp to win the
200-yard medley relay in 1:33.75.
Jennie Roskopf was a part of two conference
record-setting efforts for the women�s team, swimming to her third
straight 100-yard breaststroke title in 1:06.40 and joining Liz Herder,
Beth Bard and Kelsey Crunstedt on a school record-setting 200-yard
medley relay in 1:46.85.
Herder, a Stevens Point native, added her
first career individual title with a time of 59.05 seconds in the
100-yard backstroke. Meghan Walsh won the 100-yard butterfly for the
second straight year in 59.20 seconds.
