Men in Position for Seventh Title, Women in Tight Race at WIAC Championships

UW-Stevens Point put itself in position for a seventh consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference mens swimming and diving title, while the womens team is set to go down to the wire with UW-La Crosse for the fifth straight year after Fridays competition in Minneapolis.

The Pointer men hold a solid lead over UW-La Crosse after two days, while the women trail the Eagles by 28.5 points. The UW-La Crosse women have edged the Pointers by narrow margins the past four seasons. The meet concludes Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Alex Anderson posted the fastest 100-yard breaststroke time in the NCAA Division III this season with a conference record-setting time of 56.10 seconds. The mens team also had a conference and school record-setting performance from the 800-yard freestyle relay of Chase Grosse, Matt Grunwald, Ben Gensler and Tyler Eloranta with a winning time of 6:54.18.

Garth Newport was a double winner for the mens team, capturing the title in the 100-yard backstroke in 54.22 seconds and his third straight 100-yard butterfly crown in 50.92 seconds. Gross added an individual title in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.63 and teamed with Newport, Anderson and Willie Clapp to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:33.75.

Jennie Roskopf was a part of two conference record-setting efforts for the womens team, swimming to her third straight 100-yard breaststroke title in 1:06.40 and joining Liz Herder, Beth Bard and Kelsey Crunstedt on a school record-setting 200-yard medley relay in 1:46.85.

Herder, a Stevens Point native, added her first career individual title with a time of 59.05 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke. Meghan Walsh won the 100-yard butterfly for the second straight year in 59.20 seconds.
