Pointer Women Rely on Relays at NCAA Championships
Although swimming may be
an individual sport, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point womens
team will rely heavily on each other in order to score points at this
weekends NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in
Holland, Michigan. The Pointers have qualified just six swimmers, but
they will be competing in all five relay events, with a lot of
championship points available.
Two of the Pointers
five relays are seeded in the top ten in their event, thanks to A-cut
qualifying times. The 200-yard medley relay team of Lindsey Correll,
Kelsey Crunstedt, Liz Herder and Jennie Roskopf stands the best chance
for a spot in a national final. They are seeded fifth in the country
with a qualifying mark of 1:47.45. Herder and Roskopf will also team
with Jerica Crook and Meghan Walsh in the 400-yard medley relay team.
That unit enters the championships with the ninth best time in the
country. The Pointers also have teams entered in the 200, 400 and
800-yard freestyle relays.
Herder will also be busy
striving for all-american status in three individual events. Her best
opportunity comes in the 100-yard backstroke where she ranks 16th in the
country. Herder will also swim in the 200-yard breaststroke and the
50-yard freestyle. The top eight swimmers in each event earn all-american
status, while the next eight competitors are named honorable mention.
In addition to Herder,
three other Pointers will swim in an individual event. Crunstedt is
seeded 21st in the 50-yard freestyle, Walsh will compete in the 100-yard
butterfly and Roskopf will swim the 100-yard breaststroke.
Kenyon College of Ohio
is the favorite to win their third straight title. Kenyon has won 20 of
the last 21 national championships.
