Womens Swimmers Hope to Relay Success at
NCAA Championships
With entries in all five
relay events, the UW-Stevens Point womens swimming and diving team hopes
to return to the high national finishes the Pointers have posted three of
the past four years.
UW-Stevens Point was 31st
at the NCAA Division III championships last year, but was among the top 11
teams the three previous years. With four experienced qualifiers and two
newcomers at nationals this year, the Pointers are aiming for another
solid performance. The meet runs Thursday through Saturday at the St.
Peters Rec Complex in St. Peters, Mo.
None of the Pointers
relays enter with a mark among the top eight, but the Pointers could crack
the finals in the 200-yard freestyle relay, which is ranked 10th at
1:37.63 and the 200-yard medley relay, which is 11th at 1:48.87. The
400-yard medley relay is seeded 13th, while the 400-yard freestyle relay
is 15th and the 800-yard freestyle relay is 17th.
Leading the way for the
Pointers is senior Alissa Bartz, who is making her fourth straight
appearance at nationals and is a seven-time All-American. Bartz swam on
the 200-yard medley relay last year that finished seventh along with
Lindsey Correll and Jacci Menzel, who are also back at nationals last
year.
Individually, Bartz will
swim the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke, while Correll will
take part in the 100-yard butterfly in her third trip to the national
meet.
Also competing on relays for the Pointers this
weekend is senior Erica Janssen, who is making her fourth trip to
nationals and was an All-American in two events as a freshman. Freshmen
Jerica Crook and Kelsey Crunstedt will make their first appearance at
nationals this weekend. |
