Total 11 Records in Women�s Repeat, Pointer Men Roll to Fourth Straight
UW-La Crosse finished off one of the most impressive performances in
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women�s swimming and diving
championships history by adding four more conference records on Saturday to
finish with 11 records in the 18 swimming events.
However, the Eagles were still challenged in the team standings,
holding off UW-Stevens Point by 27 points to win their second straight
championship. UW-La Crosse beat the Pointers by seven points for the 2002
championship. The UW-Stevens Point men�s team amassed 967 team points to
capture its fourth straight title and sixth in seven years by a margin of
111 points over the second place Eagles.
UW-La Crosse sophomore Fallon Toomsen completed an incredible weekend
with three individual conference titles and three relay titles, finishing
with five conference records to earn women�s Swimmer of the Meet award.
Toomsen capped her weekend on Saturday by winning the 200-yard backstroke in
record time of 2:06.76. She also swam with Lexi Fink, Anne Melvin and Krista
Melvin to the 400-yard freestyle relay title in a record 3:32.68.
Fink added a title in the 100-yard freestyle in 53.49 seconds, edging
Krista Melvin, who set a conference record of 52.86 seconds in prelims
before swimming 53.83 in the finals. Elizabeth Miles added the fourth
Eagles� record of the day, claiming the 200-yard butterfly in 2:08.91
after a record 2:08.85 in prelims.
Eagles� freshman Carlene Empanger earned her second title of the
meet, winning the 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:55.22. UW-River Falls junior
Megan Broskoff also won her second title this weekend, taking the 200-yard
breaststroke in 2:26.68.
On the men�s side, UW-La Crosse junior Shane Ryan earned his third
title of the meet, capturing the 1,650-yard freestyle in 16:42.59 to earn
men�s Swimmer of the Meet honors. He also was a member of the 400-yard
freestyle relay in 3:07.06 for his second relay title of the meet. Travis
Martin, Trevor Rowlands and Ethan Kaercher joined Ryan on the winning relay.
Rowlands added an individual title in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of
46.91.
UW-Stevens Point had three men�s athletes all win their second
individual titles of the weekend as Travis Wolf won the 200-yard backstroke
in 1:55.60, Matt Grunwald claimed the 200-yard butterfly in 1:55.21 and Alex
Anderson was victorious in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:06.82.
UW-Stevens Point coach Al Boelk was named the conference�s men�s
Coach of the Year for the third time in his career and the women�s Coach
of the Year for the second time. |
