Pointers Outscore Warhawks to Earn Split

Despite surrendering nine runs in each game, UW-Stevens Point amassed plenty of hitting in the second game to earn a split with UW-Whitewater in a softball doubleheader on Wednesday in Whitewater.

The Pointers dropped the opening game 9-1 and then held off a furious Warhawks rally to pull out a wild 10-9 victory in the second game. UW-Stevens Point is now 15-6-1 overall and 1-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while UW-Whitewater is 15-7 overall and 4-4 in the league.

UW-Stevens Point busted out to a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning of the second game, getting four runs in the first inning as Kristen Koneiczny had a run-scoring double and two runs scored on a dropped fly ball. The Pointers, who had 13 hits in the second game, got another unearned run in the second and then two runs in the fourth on singles by Laura Zierler and Konieczny.

UW-Whitewater rallied with four runs in the bottom of the fourth and got one run in the fifth before Laura Van Abel hit a solo homer and Jenny Feidt added a run-scoring single in the sixth to push the Pointers lead back to 9-5. However, the Warhawks took advantage of a pair of UW-Stevens Point errors in the bottom of the sixth to score four unearned runs and tie the game on a squeeze bunt by Renee Hamilton.

The Pointers plated the winning run in the top of the seventh as Mandy Jellish, who was four-for-five, reached on a one-out single, moved to second on an error and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Jackie Bergers groundout. Winning pitcher Hope Krause left the game in the fifth, but re-entered in the sixth and retired the Warhawks in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win.

In the opener, UW-Stevens Point had two of its three hits in the first inning and took the lead on a run-scoring single by Rebekah Bauer. However, the Warhawks were too much from that point and broke the game open with three runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to win by the eight-run rule. Ashley Tobalsky took the loss for the Pointers.

UW-Stevens Point will host Ripon in a doubleheader on Friday at 3 p.m. at McCarty Field.
