Early Deficit
Too Much for Pointers in WIAC Loss
A potentially long day at the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball tournament ended too soon for
UW-Stevens Point as it allowed five runs in the opening inning and lost
its first game to UW-Superior 8-2 on Saturday in Menomonie.
Needing five straight victories to battle back
through the double elimination tournament and claim the tournament title,
the Pointers were hurt by four errors and ended their year with a 24-16-1
record.
Top-seeded UW-Eau Claire defeated UW-Oshkosh 3-0
in the title game later in the day to capture the tournament title and
automatic berth to the NCAA Division III tournament.
UW-Superiors Jamie Lovstad hit a three-run
double and Kacy Johnston followed with a run-scoring single with two outs
in the Yellowjackets five-run first inning.
The Pointers pulled to within 5-2 on a two-run
homer by Rebekah Bauer in the third, but they stranded two runners on base
in each of the first three innings. UW-Stevens Point had a single with one
out in the fourth, but Yellowjackets pitcher Nicole Tessier held the
Pointers hitless the rest of the game.
Michelle Holberg started and took the loss for
the Pointers. Hope Krause allowed one earned run over six and one-third
innings of relief. |
